Early History of AI in the 1950s
The concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerged in the 1950s after the mathematician Alan Turing published his paper titled Computer Machinery and Intelligence, a work that addressed fundamental questions such as:
“Can machines think?”
“If humans can solve tasks and make decisions based on provided data, why can’t machines do the same?”
This paper eventually became known as the Turing Test, which inspired scientists to create machines capable of mimicking human intelligence.
Development of AI from 1956 to the 1980s
In 1956, the term “Artificial Intelligence (AI)” was coined at a summer workshop titled the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence (DSRPAI). The project, which was expected to last 6–8 weeks, was attended by 11 mathematicians and scientists. The four project organizers John McCarthy, Claude Shannon, Nathaniel Rochester, and Marvin Minsky are considered as the founding fathers of AI.
By the 1960s, AI's potential attracted substantial government funding for its development and research. During this year, the first Natural Language Processing (NLP) system, named STUDENT, was created using the Lisp programming language. This program helped users read and solve word problems found in high school level algebra books.
ELIZA also emerged during this period, designed to explore communication between humans and machines. It achieved this through pattern matching and substitution methodologies, which provided insights into specific aspects of programming.
However, AI's progress faced significant obstacles due to the limited capabilities of computers at the time, which were unable to fully support AI's development. This led to a decline in research funding that persisted until the 1980s.
Advancement of AI from the 1980s to the 2010s
The 1980s marked a period of rapid growth and renewed interest in AI, driven by research breakthroughs that enabled computers to learn from their mistakes and make decisions independently.
Between the 1990s and 2000s, AI research led to significant technological improvements, such as the Deep Blue machine, which defeated a world class chess player, capturing global attention. Automation began to emerge, and machine learning started to be applied to assist with various tasks in the early 2000s.
Subsequently, the concept of Deep Learning flourished in the 2010s. Supported by an abundance of data, advancements in machine learning, and increased computational power, AI became capable of analyzing speech, natural language, and visuals.
